PORTS

The port potentiality is always the biggest advantage of Ba Ria-Vung Tau. Ports on Thi Vai river, Dinh river, Ben Dam Bay,etc. have been gradually established. If bringing into play all the potential, the handle capacity can reach 70-80 million tons/year. Thi Vai river is 32 kilometres long (with 25 kilometres running across the province ), 600 to 800 meters wide, and 10 to 20 meters deep. With its flowing direction being nearly parallel to the National Highway 51, the river is convenient for building a deep water port, which can

accommodate ships up to 30 to 50 thousand DWT. The cross current of the Thi Vai river and the Go Gia river is suitable for building a accommodating ships of 60 thousand DWT. Calculations show that it is possible to erect eight terminals along this river with the total loading capacity of 50 million tones per year. Currently, Ba Ria Sereece port with a length of 132 meters on Thi Vai river has been put into operation with a loading capacity of 1.2 million tones per year and can receive 60,000-ton vessels. Six other projects on building ports on this river has been under consideration.

The Sao Mai – Ben Dinh deepwater estuary enables ports accommodating container ships to 80,000 DWT and oil tankers to 200,000 DWT.

In Con Dao, there is Ben Dam Bay with 4 km long, 1.6 km wide, 5 to 8 m deep, a land area of about 20 ha. Being safe from the wind, this port can operate all the year round. Its natural conditions gives possibility to the port construction  with a capacity of 5 to 6 million tons/year.

On Dinh river of which the portion through Vung Tau City is about 10 km long. Nowadays, a range of ports has been invested and come into use ,accessible for ships of 5 to 10 thousand DWT, with a loading capacity of 3 to 4 million tones per year. Some ports could be named here such as Vietsovpetro joint venture port ( 1,387 m), and PTSC port ( 370m) easy of access for 10,000 ton vessels; Petroleum port K2 ( 330 m) and Commercial port (250m) easy of

access for 5,000 ton vessels; Fishing ports e.g. Cat Lo (110m), Phuoc Tinh(50m), Ben Dam Con Dao(336m) accessible for 1000 to 2000 ton vessels.

In conclusion, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has great potentials for developing ports which can handle by 2010 a loading capacity of 100 million tones a  year.
The system of ports in the province, if invested properly and developed well, will serve as the entrance to tens of millions of tones of goods, material and equipment contributing to the economic development of the Southern provinces in Viet Nam.
