OIL & GAS POTENTIALS

Anyone when talking about Ba Ria-Vung Tau also thinks of the place where oil and gas exploitation industry has been developed. Actually, oil and gas are its important resources having the biggest economic potentiality on the continental shelf of the province. In here, Cuu Long Sedimentary Basin, and Nam Con Son basin are considered as having favorable exploitation conditions ,and the biggest oil and gas prospects comparatively with other basins in the whole

country. A lot of oilfields with considerable reserves have been found such as Bach Ho, Rong, Dai Hung, Thanh Long, etc. of which the industrial reserves reach over 300 million tons of recovered oil, the proportion of associated gas is 150 – 180 m3/ton of oil and the exploitation output over 20 million tons per year.

According to foreign experts in geology, Vietnam sea area has a lot of single stratum structure and the potential in nature gas is much bigger than oil, about 200 – 300 billion m3 with an exploitation capacity of 5 –6 billion m3. Particularly in Con Son belonging to the continental shelf of Ba Ria-Vung Tau, two big gas mines discovered are Lan Tay and Lan Do with reserves of about 58 billion m3 and the stable exploitation capacity of 1.0 – 3.0 billion m3/year or more depending on the demand.

With the aim of serving the industrialization and modernization of the nation, the oil and gas exploitation on Ba Ria-Vung Tau continental shelf is of important significance. Only two years and a half after its foundation, Vietsopetro discovered oil in Bach Ho oilfield and June 26,1986 saw its first ton of oil of the country to be exploited. Vietsopetro has exploited 50 million tons of oil until October 12,1997 and 100 million tons until November 21,2001.

In the recent years, the crude oil has become the most important export goods of Vietnam and brought back the significant export turnover for the nation. In 2001, 16.7 million tons of crude oil has been exported, getting 3127.5 million dollars of export turnover.

Together with crude oil, the associated gas has been exploited as well. The gas output is also on the high increasing. In 1995, the first year of collecting and bring gas to the shore, its output is 183 million m3; and in 2000, 1.5 billion m3. For the time being, 4 – 5 million m3 /day on average is brought to the shore.
In the near future, the province calls for investment in the gas and oil exploitation as follows:

  • Continue the exploration in order to find out more mines to increase the output

  • Raise the domestic service proportion and expand services in other fields

  • Encourage investors to invest in industrial zones of the province to develop the gas  industry  in Ba Ria-Vung Tau
